One of the most interesting parts of this multi-genre collection was the opportunity to try different forms of writing and representing. I really challenged myself by writing the fictional radio transcript piece as I have never looked into that form before. After observing other radio transcripts online, I was able to come up with a few questions, answers and proper formatting without too much difficulty. The visual/multimedia genre allowed me to add some creativity into the project through a painting. Being able to include creativity to show my theme was neat, even if it did put me out of my comfort zone. Overall, experimenting with these forms went well, and increased my writing abilities and allowed me to make decisions confidently.
If I had managed my time better, I would have gone even further in-depth with the pieces and increased their lengths. The theme was fairly well-developed but definitely could have been further explained in my informational and non-fiction piece to make the connection to the theme more evident. This would’ve allowed for a more comprehensive collection and in addition, the pieces would have been the same quality of writing but longer due to the extra development. Some of the shorter pieces included in the collection would become longer and even stronger. The changes in theme development and length that could be made would have improved this compilation and taken it to the next level.
The strongest aspect of my collection is the diverse topics used that all relate back to the theme statement and my visual piece. I found that this was the most challenging part since significant time was spent deciding on different topics for each piece that still reflected the theme. The four topics I chose; self-sufficient housing, American history, Amish way of life and student experiences at a university are all quite different but I was quite proud of linking them all together through the theme statement of independence, providing freedom and therefore leading to happiness and contentment. I feel that the visual piece is a strong showing of my writing abilities as it clearly explains my thinking and what techniques were attempted in the painting. Since my painting abilities are limited, the write-up is a crucial part that helps to make the painting make sense with my theme. The linking of the theme statement throughout and the visual text were the most forceful parts of the collection because they were planned carefully and thoughtfully.
